OCTOBER - the 27th Anniversary of Polish American Heritage Month
Polish Americans Celebrate Heritage Month
The Polish-American Foundation of Texas (www.polamfound.com), a non-profit corporation consisting of the members of local Polonia, would like to invite you to celebrate the Polish Heritage Month in the DFW area. Marta Dobkowska, the founder and current PAFT vice president, along with several other Board Members, have been busy for a few months now preparing for various venues featuring Polish culture, traditions and rich history that spans more that 1,000 years. For a detailed schedule of events, or with questions regarding the PAFT, interested persons should contact Marta at martadob@verizon.net
To allow for the Polish presence to be especially visible in North Texas during this month, the PAFT is sponsoring many events. There is a Polish Display at the International Art Exhibit hosted by the Plano Courtyard. The exhibit features, among others, some works by two young and talented local artists with the Polish roots.
The Polish presence was also noted during the Plano International Festival held on October 4th. “We were very excited to witness a great interest in our Cultural Booth during the Plano Festival”, said Dr. Ewa Stewart, PAFT Board Member. “We had some folks returning after visiting with us last year and it was an awesome experience to talk with them again”, stated Dr. Stewart.
Soon we will have another exciting opportunity to appreciate Polish colorful cultural display which will showcase Polish art and tradition, while sampling some delicious treats served at the Polish Food Booth. The WORLDFEST Festival, sponsored by the DFW International, will be held at the Addison Circle Park on October 25th. There will be a Parade of Nations, Festival Passport Program, dance and music performances (Dance Ensemble “Orleta” will perform a medley of Polish City Folk Dances), and many other attractions worth seeing. For 22 years now, the month of October has had a special meaning to Polish Americans living in the USA. Formalized by President Reagan on October 13, 1986 with the issue of Proclamation number 5548, this month is Polish Heritage Month. The American President established this distinction upon the Polish Nation in recognition of many contributions of Poles to the United States and its citizens. At the time that President Reagan wrote this Proclamation, Poland was in the agonies of a struggle as the first Eastern European County to throw off the yoke of communism imposed by a Soviet backed regime at the end of WW2. Despite the threat of Soviet tanks at their border, “Solidarity” refused to be crushed. With John Paul II, the first Polish born Pope in the history of the world as an ally, President Reagan reaffirmed a relationship that historically has promoted cooperation between the two countries with aid to the movement. From the efforts General Casimir Pulaski, who gave his life in the defense of Savannah during the Revolutionary War, to Thaddeus Kosciuszko, builder of the West Point and key officer during the first major victory over the British at Saratoga, Poles stood alongside Americans in defense of freedom. Even today, Polish solders stand alongside U.S. soldiers fighting for freedom in Iraq and Afghanistan.
In October 2008 we also commemorate the 400th Anniversary of the arrival of the first Polish settlers at Jamestown, Virginia. Polish artisans were recruited by the English backers of the expedition from the Slask area of Poland. In particular, there was a great need for Polish glass workers. Upon arriving at Jamestown they made “America” their new home. (400th Anniversary of Arrival of the First Polish Settlers in America at Jamestown, Virginia)
